Greeks withdraw €800 million a day to buy food

Greeks are pulling their cash out of the banks and stocking up with food ahead of a cliffhanger election on Sunday that many fear will result in the country being forced out of the euro. via Debt crisis: Greeks stockpile food and withdraw cash – European, Business – Independent.ie.

Italian borrowing costs continued to rise this morning throwing the Eurozone into further chaos. A move to shore up Spanish banks to the tune of €100 billion at the weekend was laughed at by the financial markets within hours as they sent interest on Spanish borrowing to record levels.

‘I feel sorry for common Europeans,’ said Socialist Affairs correspondent, Celeste Chavez, who repatriating back to her Venezuelan home with immediate effect. ‘Long live Ireland.’

Opposition on planning report: Whitewash

Government reports

Last nights government review on planning irregularities in local councils has been branded a ‘whitewash’ by opposition leaders.

The Green Party also rubbished the report, describing it as the “classic cover-up job”. via Opposition dismisses ‘whitewash’ report on councils’ planning inquiries · TheJournal.ie.

It has also been revealed that six of the seven councils in question are currently in control of the government parties. The eyes of the whole country will be on TD’s this evening as they gather to vote against a motion on independent inquiries into planning matters. The motion was put forward by the opposition.

‘They need to be shrewd how they see this,’ said Faye Ecoruin. ‘Careers may depend on it.’

It’s the second time in a week the government have been cascaded by the contents of a report. Last week PAC (Public Accounts Committee) Chairman, John McGuinness, lambasted an external report into last years €3.6billion accounting error by the Department of Finance.

‘The taoiseach’s stress levels must be through the roof,’ said our health spokesperson, Mandy Fitt. ‘Hopefully he’s squeezing in a jog or a movie now and again.’

Enda Kenny on bank guarantee file: “It’s either shredded or disposed of…” – Fianna Fáil furious.

Maybe Brian knows?

The recent show of Europhile love and unity between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael appears to have drawn to an end. Answering questions in the Dáil yesterday, the taoiseach took a swipe at his Euro leaning comrades over the details of the infamous bank guarantee implemented in 2009 which ruined the country

“In respect of the bank guarantee which you completed at four o’clock in the morning, nobody in the country knows what you said. There is no file in the Department of the Taoiseach on this. It’s either shredded or disposed of, dispatched of.” via FF urges Kenny to back up file-shredding claim | Irish Examiner.

Fianna Fáil immediately hit back and said the taoiseach should back up the claims or withdraw the comment. A retraction has not been forthcoming.

‘Intriguing,’ said Larry Bird. ‘Where are those files? The transcripts, text message details, phone records.  All the other things you’d expect a proper democratic government to keep for the public record.’

We don’t know Larry, but if anyone does …
